Paper Tiger

Producer | DJ

It is 1996. You are in a rusted-out Corolla with a crossfader apoxied to the dashboard. Killsadie, De La Soul, and Lifter Puller are maxing out the speakers. The window does not go down, no AC. He is singing, and smiling like a motherfucker. Welcome to Paper Tiger’s car.

Paper Tiger is Doomtree’s live DJ, our resident graphic designer, and one of our esteemed producers. Paper grew up with music at home, as the son of Minneapolis rocker Johnny Rey. As a teenager, Paper was friend to P.O.S, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan and MK Larada. After high school, the four lived in the now [in]famous Doomtree House—a den of creativity, beer cans, stencils, trash, and neighborhood concern.

As a producer, Paper Tiger’s style reveals his varied tastes. Listen for the influences of mid-school rap, electronic music, his friends. His snares snap, and his samples are distinguished by unusual textures and treatments. The music he makes ranges from the beautiful lamentations like Canonade (from his False Hopes release) to club-fire bangers like Game Over with Mike Mictlan, or Low light / Low Life off “Never Better” by P.O.S.

As a graphic artist, Paper keeps the Doomtree website, posters, and flyers on point. Sunglasses, skateboards, sneakers, NYC, Helvetica—all true of Mr. Tiger.

His 7-inch, Cloquet, was released at Blowout 5.

His first full length album “Made Like Us” was releases July 2010.

MADE LIKE US – UPDATE

Posted on July 07, 2010

Hey guys, we have been working hard over here these days getting ready for the release of my first full length album, Made Like Us.

I am excited to announce that we are having a CD release party for it on July 24th. I am very excited and think it is going to be a kickass evening. A few crew friends and I will be performing some of the new tracks from the album, as well as melting faces with blazing rap set right after. We will also be doing a little something we like to call Doomtree Karaoke, this will be a first for us, but I will be on the turntables so you can come up grab a mic, and do your best version of your favorite Doomtree song. Also my man Budo is coming into town to open the show. So looking forward to this.

CD RELEASE PARTY

Also I have leaked a new track from the album called “The Bully Plank”, I hope you like it.

Last but not least…

We are having a little listening party for the record, check it HERE

20 MIN MIX #6

Posted on May 10, 2010

Last Friday I had the opportunity to DJ at the world famous Get Cryphy party at First Avenue in Minneapolis.

It was an absolute blast, it is so nice when people are dancing and going nuts on the dance floor.

Shout outs to Plain Ole Bill, Jimmy 2 Times, Last Word, and Prof.

I put this 2o minute mix together of some of the dance floor jams that went down at this party.

This may not be for everyone, it is for sure dance floor music, so don’t hate, and don’t try to throw this one on first thing in the morning when having your breakfast.

April…

Posted on April 30, 2010

Man, April has been such a crazy month, and I have been on more airplanes than I can even remember, but it has been great. Here is a short re-cap of the things that went down for me.

NYC

NYC

I just recently finished my first full length album, and because of that I was in NYC for a few days shooting some photos for the artwork with my friend Billy Phelps.

It was a great time, and the work turned out amazing. More info on the record soon.

LA

After being home from NY for a few days me and the whole crew flew out to Los Angeles for the legendary Paid Dues concert.

That was super fun, I got to see some great acts, I was standing about 30 or so feet from Ice Cube at one point, and all together it was amazing.

After the show I hung out with some friends for a while, and pretty much went skateboarding everyday, and ate amazing mexican food.

FL

Then it was time to head to Florida. I DJed a good friend of mine’s wedding, and his real name is actually James Brown.

That was super fun, then I hung out for a few days in South Beach (which they call SOBE, and I think that is stupid).

Miami, is a place I have never been, and it is pretty much what you would expect. I drove a scooter all day and got a little sunburn. All good things.

Now I am home and loving it, keep your eyes and ears open for a few new 20 Min Mixes I will be dropping soon.

PAPER TIGER 20 MIN MIX #5

So we are all headed over to California next week for the Paid Dues Festival, and guess who’s headlining?

ICE CUBE.

Yep it’s pretty much insane all day. So I decided to throw together my favorite Cube songs for this installment of the 20 MIN MIX

20 MIN MIX #4

Posted on February 22, 2010

Ahhhh yes, here is the 4th installment of the 20 min mix.

This one takes us back to the early 90’s with new jack swing.

What a wonderful time, it wasn’t really R+B, it really wasn’t Rap,

but something in between, and all together awesome. It reminds

me of very bright colored suits, and questionable dance moves.

So let’s get it crackin’ and I’ll hit you with another one real soon.
