Paper Tiger

Producer | DJ

It is 1996. You are in a rusted-out Corolla with a crossfader apoxied to the dashboard. Killsadie, De La Soul, and Lifter Puller are maxing out the speakers. The window does not go down, no AC. He is singing, and smiling like a motherfucker. Welcome to Paper Tiger’s car.

Paper Tiger is Doomtree’s live DJ, our resident graphic designer, and one of our esteemed producers. Paper grew up with music at home, as the son of Minneapolis rocker Johnny Rey. As a teenager, Paper was friend to P.O.S, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan and MK Larada. After high school, the four lived in the now [in]famous Doomtree House—a den of creativity, beer cans, stencils, trash, and neighborhood concern.

As a producer, Paper Tiger’s style reveals his varied tastes. Listen for the influences of mid-school rap, electronic music, his friends. His snares snap, and his samples are distinguished by unusual textures and treatments. The music he makes ranges from the beautiful lamentations like Canonade (from his False Hopes release) to club-fire bangers like Game Over with Mike Mictlan, or Low light / Low Life off “Never Better” by P.O.S.

As a graphic artist, Paper keeps the Doomtree website, posters, and flyers on point. Sunglasses, skateboards, sneakers, NYC, Helvetica—all true of Mr. Tiger.

His 7-inch, Cloquet, was released at Blowout 5.

His first full length album “Made Like Us” was releases July 2010.

3 weeks…

Posted on February 18, 2010

I just got back from 3 amazing weeks of being on the road. Well, away from home at least.

The first week I was gone I was in Aspen Colorado. I DJ a party for the X-games out there, and it was as much if not more fun than last time. I got to stay in a baller ass hotel room for 6 days, and live like a king.

Then, I flew home for just around 9 and a half hours, then went on a mini tour with P.O.S and Dessa. Played a few shows, had a few laughs, I loved it… but my  jump rope skills need help.

MINI TOUR

And Grieves and Budo where there too. Sweet dudes all day.

Then I flew from Salt Lake city to New York City for a week or so. Got to hang with my friends out there, all good things.

Love that place. Well, I am home now, and loving it. Back to the grind.

I am really confused as to what time it is right now, but it feels great to be home.

I really wasn’t expecting it to like like the middle of January when I got here though… Minnesota.

A quick note from tour…

Posted on October 07, 2009

Things are going great here in the UK. The bands we are touring with; King Blues, and Imperial Leisure, are awesome dudes, and the shows have been great.

A few things I have picked up in Europe so far.

1. Water.

In Germany, everyone drinks sparkling water, (Note: they do not know what club soda means). If you ask for still water, they will get very confused and ask something like, “You mean from the sink?” They don’t get it.

2. Mexican Food.

There is no such thing. There just isnt, there really isnt really any hot sauce either, except 1 thing, Ill get to that next…

3. Nando’s

I ate here 2wice, its the best food I have had all trip,. Really good spicy chicken.

Sam hooked this one up, and just in time.

Now a few questions for my friends at Travel Lodge…

1. Why do you not have a telephone in the room? I just really cant make sense of that.

2. Why do I have to pay 10 pounds a day for your shitty internet service. Dude, not cool.

3. Why in the world does the shower have to be either 160 degrees or off?

I dont mean to sound like I am complaining about anything, but Come on!

London!
